An evaporative air cooler, also known as a swamp cooler, is a device that cools air through the evaporation of water. Evaporative coolers are very different from air conditioners, which use vapor-compression or absorption refrigeration cycles. Instead, evaporative coolers work with evaporation of water, which is more energy efficient, though may not be as powerful as an air conditioner. Basic parts of an evaporative cooler include a water tank to store water, a pump to move water from the tank to the top of the unit, a cooling media, typically known as honeycomb, which absorbs the water, and a fan to pull hot dry air through the wet honeycomb and throw out cool, moist air into your room. Swamp or evaporative coolers can have additional features such as adjustable louvers, rolling caster wheels, continuous water fill etc.
